Why I Created This Lab
As the world continues to experience war, forced displacement, interpersonal violence, systemic oppression, and consequences of the climate change, more clinicians are encountering complex trauma in their practice than ever before.
Many therapists have completed excellent trauma trainings. We understand the theories, know the interventions, and we also have so much compassion for folks we are working with. Still, we:
- struggle to stay present with complex clinical presentations
- think more about what to do in the session than how to be with our clients
- freeze, fawn or feel overwhelmed when difficult clinical material emerges
- fail to examine how our countertransference inevitably shapes the outcome of therapy
- lose the sense of aliveness and creativity, especially when the therapeutic relationship moves through inevitable moments of rupture and repair
The therapeutic relationship is what heals.
For that relationship to heal, we need therapists who can remain present, embodied, attuned and fully alive in the room.
I created the Complex Trauma Supervision Lab as a space where you can
- fine-tune your presence and embodiment
- unpack the ways your own history may unconsciously pull you away from the living relational field between you and your client
- strengthen your capacity to stay present through moments of uncertainty, rupture and repair
So that the most supported, alive and creative version of you is available in the therapy room, even when you are presented with painful clinical material.

Ivana Kolakovic, MA, RP, SEP
I am a Registered Psychotherapist and trauma practitioner. I am deeply passionate about supporting you in your process of sitting with and naming all that is painful and scary within you and around you. Moreover, I am passionate about seeing you step into your own power and resilience and beauty.
In addition to my private practice, I work as a Registered Psychotherapist with Homewood Health’s Crisis Management Services team, providing clinical support to organizations following traumatic incidents across GTA.
I completed 5-year Psychotherapy training at the Gestalt Institute of Toronto, 3-year Somatic Experiencing training for trauma resolution (Montreal), and I hold a MA in Women’s and Gender Studies (Carleton University, Ottawa).
I work from a humanistic, embodied and evidence-based framework and have additional trainings in CBT therapy, sex therapy, psychoanalytic theory and peer-based crisis response/suicide care strategies. For several years, I worked as a supervisor at the Distress Centre of Greater Toronto and have rich experience in frontline crisis work, supporting folks who struggle with suicidal ideation/attempts, self-harm, substance use and isolation, that are the direct result of marginalization, poverty and/or abuse they experienced at some point in their lives.
I was born and raised in Kraljevo, Serbia (former Yugoslavia). Throughout my childhood and young adulthood, I was exposed to different forms of violence and to the abundance of love and creativity and care. This is where I learned almost everything I know about life: that the beauty persists amidst suffering, and that every human life is precious and complex.
“Over and over, the answer is the same, isn’t it? Love, love, love. The salve and the cure. In order to become a better person, I had to do something utterly unintuitive. I had to reject the idea that punishing myself would solve the problem. I had to find the love.”
